MP welcomes Minister's statement on Thalidomide survivors

MP welcomes Minister’s statement on

Thalidomide survivors

Tony Wright MP has welcomed a recent statement to the House of Commons by Mike O’Brien MP, Minister of State at the Department of Health on Thalidomide survivors.

The Government has announced that it will now fund a £20 million, three-year pilot scheme, operated in England by the Thalidomide Trust, to distribute money to survivors to enable them to have more personal health care.

The funds will be used to explore how the health needs of thalidomide survivors can best be met in the long term, and will also look into the effectiveness of working through an expert national body. The Government can then gauge how this might be applied to other small groups of geographically dispersed patients with specialised needs.

Tony said:

‘Several of my constituents in Great Yarmouth have been affected by this and I know they will welcome the Minister’s comments. The £20 million, three-year pilot scheme will be of great benefit to all affected by this drug and will help meet the health needs of survivors in a more personalised way.

‘While this commitment from the Government is a positive move, the contribution of the Thalidomide Trust in supporting survivors cannot be overstated. In addition, I acknowledge the suffering that has faced the children and families affected as a result of this drug, and I look forward to seeing this money being spent to make the lives of survivors better in the near future.’
