MP urges people to take a ‘Health MOT’
Tony Wright MP is urging people to take a free ‘health MOT’ in the New Year as part of a nation-wide programme by the National Health Service.
From January to March in the New Year, more than 5,000 people across Great Yarmouth and Waveney will be invited to take part in the check-up at their local GP’s practice, available for everyone aged 40-75.
The procedure assesses patients’ risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, stroke and kidney disease, and will last 20-30 minutes. Further checks will then be carried out at five year intervals.
Each ‘MOT’ will have an action plan including practical advice on ways to improve health and wellbeing, and everyone who uses the service will be given a health guide on free programmes available such as stop smoking services, weight management programmes and exercise regimes.
Tony said:
‘This is a great initiative by the NHS and one I will certainly be taking them up on. This free ‘MOT’ is a brilliant opportunity for everyone to assess their health in the New Year, and to catch conditions they may be developing early before it becomes a serious problem.
‘I urge everyone across the Borough to take part in this public health exercise, and it just goes to show the Government and the NHS’s commitment to everyone’s health by providing this free service and vital information. Plus it will certainly help anyone with a health-based New Year’s resolution!’
