MP pleased wth new school building funding

MP pleased with new school building funding

01 December 2009

Tony Wright MP welcomed the announcement of the £800 million Building Schools for the Future funding. Norfolk is to benefit by receiving up to £80 million of the extra money, with Great Yarmouth being allocated £12.4 million.

Tony said:

‘Over the past 12 years I am proud of the Labour Government delivering on its promise to make education a priority. During that time tens of millions of pounds have been spent on our schools over the whole constituency and the improvements are plain to see. The latest funding will see Great Yarmouth High School have a £12.4 million rebuild and refurbishment project.

‘This funding announcement shows that even in difficult economic circumstances this Government is committed to ensuring that our children receive the best quality education in the best surroundings possible, and I look forward to seeing the transformation of Yarmouth High in the near future.’

By July 2010 more than 4,000 schools will have been built, rebuilt or refurbished since 1997, the biggest sustained period of school building since Victorian times. The Government has invested capital of £21.9 billion in schools between 2008-11 and has invested £8 billion this year alone.
